First Class 27th March
Here are some of things First Class have been doing this week.
Maths
We focused on Fractions this week with a particular emphasis on halves. The children completed lots of practical activities including designing their own 'pizzas' which had different toppings on each half as well as colouring and cutting 2D shapes in half. I have asked the children to keep a look out for fractions this weekend. E.g. cutting a sandwich in half or when a glass is half full. The focus for this week's test was doubles and halves.
English
The children read a non fiction text about rabbits this week. Some of the new vocabulary they learned included 'predator', 'warrens' and 'peripheral vision'. They also enjoyed hearing the story of 'the very Hungry Catterpillar' and 'the Gruffalo'. They enjoyed working together using picture clues to build compound words. The sound we focused on for phonics and our spellings this week was 'igh'.
Irish
The children have been learning the numbers 11-20 and also played a number of games to reinforce the names of everyday objects we use frequently around the classroom.
SESE
As part of our ongoing topic of 'Plants' the children discussed what flowers need to grow. They then planted their own flowers which they will care for as a class.
