Junior Infant- School Closure Activities

23rd Jan 2025

Hello Parents,

Due to school closure tomorrow I have made a list of suggested learning activities you can do with your child.

Literacy: Handwriting- writing the letters o and u. These will be our focus letters next week.

Jolly Phonics: focus on sounds /ai/, /j/ and /oa/. Encourage your child to suggest words with these sounds. E.g r/ai/n (rain) , j/u/m/p (jump) and c/oa/t. (Coat).

Reading: guide your child to discuss the beginning, middle and end to a story. Use the story 'Elmer in the Wind' as stimulus. https://youtu.be/v0Nvn6BIDc0?feature=shared

Numeracy: copy and continue a pattern using house hold materials eg. ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŒ ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŒ ๐ŸŽ

Find link to numeracy game for shape patterns:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns

Practice counting up (0- 10) and down (10-0) with an emphasis on number 6
eg. 0 1 2 3 4 5 *clap* 7 8 9 10
10 9 8 7 stamp 5 4 3 2 1 0

Before/ after/ inbetween: Line up about 4 or 5 different objects in a straight line and ask your child to identify what comes before/ after and inbetween.

Eg. What is before the dolphin? What comes after the tiger? What in inbetween the zebra and the dolphin? Etc.
๐Ÿฏ ๐Ÿฆ“ ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿฌ ๐Ÿฆ‹

Self management: encourage your  child to practice putting on and zipping up their own coat and school bag.

SESE: Winter time. Discuss the pictures of our recent 'Winter Walk' and ask your child to identify the 'signs of winter'.

Gaeilge ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช: Chaitheamh Aimsire (hobbies)
bád (boat),  eitléan (aeroplane) rothar (bike) liathróid (ball) agus carr (car).

Tá eitléan ag Niamh (Niamh has an aeroplane).

These are exceptional circumstances and this 1:1 learning will be much more intense than the kind of learning we usually do in school. 5 minutes per activity is more than enough time.

We hope you and your family stay safe during the storm. Take care ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿคž
